Bathroom Remodel Trends

One of the interesting trends I have been observing recently is an upsurge of interest in bathroom remodels. There are probably several reasons for this, including the fact that bathroom remodels are relatively inexpensive, and perceived to have good “bang for the buck”. Since money is harder to borrow these days, paying for a bathroom remodel with all cash is generally a lot easier than a major kitchen remodel, for example.

If there is one theme we are seeing here at Design Build Specialists, it is an emphasis on Comfort. Our customers are often replacing a tub with a walk-in shower, which is easier to get in and out of, and can look stunning. We’re doing a lot of work with glass tiles combined with ceramic and porcelain tile inlays for some great looks.

We’re also seeing a lot of vessel sinks on a furniture cabinet with a beautiful countertop, and some really interesting faucets. We have a number of examples of this in the Portfolio section of our website.

Finally, heated floors are a real luxury item. They are somewhat expensive to run (an extra $20-30 per month typically), but if a homeowner has a relatively fixed morning schedule where the floor can be automatically heated up at the same time everyday, a heated floor provides fantastic comfort.

Is good design expensive?

Clients often ask us whether good design needs to be expensive. Here at Design Build Specialists, we don’t think it has to be.

Good design incorporates the needs and lifestyle of the homeowner, and is very effective in its use of space planning. We believe that the best results for the client occur when the design, and the designer, are part of the process from beginning to completion. We’ve seen too many designs in the past where an independent designer will create a plan for a client that may look great, but is nowhere close to the client’s budget, and everyone ends up unhappy. That’s why we have in-house designers who not only create very effective designs, but create a design that honor’s the client’s budget.

So from our perspective, good design does not necessarily need to be expensive.

Kitchen Design Basics

Clients often ask us about the concept of “the triangle” when considering a kitchen remodel. Basically, the classic “triangle” is composed of the sink/dishwasher, the refrigerator, and the stove/oven, and kitchen designs paid careful attention to the flow between these three elements. What has happened recently, however, is that kitchen remodels have often become larger, and the “triangle” has morphed into multiple triangles. This is especially true if the kitchen has an island, or multiple ovens and stoves.
